Part of Marketing attribution reviews: a gated test framework
Attribution routes compared for one England buyer task, with the manual process as baseline
Compare named attribution routes for one England buyer task against the manual baseline, with public facts, evidence fields, costs and privacy gates.
What to take away
- Start with Google Analytics 4 and the existing manual reconciliation sheet. Neither adds a licence fee, and the data is already collected.
- HubSpot Marketing Hub fits lead-led businesses where enquiries and deals sit in one CRM. Triple Whale fits Shopify-first retailers tracking blended return on ad spend.
- Adobe Analytics is an annual enterprise licence for buyers with a data team. Meta Ads Manager reports Meta's own spend only and cannot act as the reconciliation ledger.
- The manual baseline costs analyst time, not licences. The worked example below puts 12 hours a month at about £3,600 a year.
- Attributed credit is not proof of causation. Comparing attribution methods shows why each method needs its own row.
The buyer task this comparison serves
One England task, stated once, so every route is judged on the same job. A UK-registered company sells online and through a small sales team. It already runs Google Analytics 4. Paid media runs between £20,000 and £50,000 a month across Meta and Google. One analyst handles reporting part time.
The task has two questions. Which channel produced each online order? Which channel produced each sales enquiry? Each route is compared only on those two.
Five routes on one grid
What it does
- Google Analytics 4
- Web and app analytics with data-driven attribution models
- Adobe Analytics
- Enterprise multi-touch credit through Attribution IQ
- Meta Ads Manager
- Ad platform reporting and optimisation
- HubSpot Marketing Hub
- CRM-linked revenue attribution
- Triple Whale
- Ecommerce analytics with multi-touch and marketing mix modelling blends
On this task
- Google Analytics 4
- Channel credit for orders and form fills
- Adobe Analytics
- Cross-channel credit with a data team
- Meta Ads Manager
- Meta-attributed conversions only
- HubSpot Marketing Hub
- Enquiry to deal to revenue in one system
- Triple Whale
- Blended and channel return on ad spend on Shopify
Indicative cost shape
- Google Analytics 4
- Free standard edition; Analytics 360 is an annual enterprise contract
- Adobe Analytics
- Annual licence, five figures upward
- Meta Ads Manager
- No licence fee; the cost is media spend
- HubSpot Marketing Hub
- Published tiers from low tens of pounds a month to four figures
- Triple Whale
- Subscription tiers from roughly £100 a month upward
Every figure in that last column is indicative. Verify it at source before contracting, because tiers, contact limits and minimum terms vary by edition.
GA4's data-driven model spreads credit across touchpoints, and Google's GA4 attribution documentation explains how to select it. It still reports what was credited, not what the spend caused.
Example: costing the manual baseline
Assumptions, stated so you can swap in your own. One analyst at a fully loaded £25 an hour. Twelve hours a month on reconciliation. That is 144 hours a year, or about £3,600.
The same analyst rate applies to every route in the grid. A tool that removes four hours a month saves £1,200 a year. That saving is the figure a licence has to beat.
Record your own numbers in the attribution budget template, which keeps an evidence field on every money row.
Which route fits which buyer
Treat these as starting points, not verdicts.
- Under about 3,000 orders a month with one analystGA4 plus the manual sheet.
- Lead-led B2B where the CRM already holds dealsHubSpot Marketing Hub.
- Shopify retailer with heavy paid social spend: Triple Whale.
- Large enterprise with a data team and a five-figure licence budget: Adobe Analytics.
- Reporting on media onlyMeta Ads Manager, as a supplement.
Rules that apply to every route
If a route uses tags, pixels or SDKs, PECR and UK GDPR apply to that storage and access. The ICO's guidance on storage and access technologies covers consent and the available exceptions.
Data minimisation still applies. Collecting more identifiers does not make a route more accurate. Apple's App Tracking Transparency limits cross-app tracking on iOS, so Meta reports modelled conversions rather than observed ones.
Map the fields each route actually needs before configuration. Mapping personal data and device tracking does that row by row.
Testing before you commit
- Write the two questions down as the pass condition.
- Pick a fixed period of orders and enquiries.
- Run GA4, the manual sheet and one candidate over the same period.
- Record differences in joins, timezone, late records and refunds.
- Set a review date and a named owner for the reconciliation.
Do not change the fixture mid-test. Record the difference and leave the choice open until the numbers settle.
Common questions
What does the manual baseline cost?
Analyst time. At the stated assumption of 12 hours a month and £25 an hour, about £3,600 a year. That is the number any licence has to beat.
Which route should an England buyer pick first?
Google Analytics 4 plus the existing manual sheet, for most small and mid-sized buyers. Move to HubSpot or Triple Whale when the CRM or the storefront already holds the revenue data.
Why is Meta Ads Manager not the ledger?
It reports conversions Meta attributes to Meta. The same order can be claimed by Google and by Meta. Only cross-system reconciliation or a controlled test resolves that overlap.
Do these routes prove that ad spend caused the sales?
No. Attribution allocates credit by rule. Incrementality needs a counterfactual, which means a controlled test or a credible quasi-experimental design.
